Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations
JCAHO mandates the routine assessment of spiritual needs.
The commission considers that the spiritual component of
a person’s life must be considered in health care.
In their accreditation reviews, they evaluate how patients'
spiritual needs are being assessed. For example, areas of
assessment include how patients use spiritual coping, and
how patients' prayer life and religious practices give meaning
to their life. A patient's spiritual needs are considered
an indispensable factor in providing total health care to
patients.
